The Perfect Package: How THG Eco Optimised APG's Supply Chain
The Perfect Package
In the world of logistics, the route to net-zero rarely follows a straight set of directions. For Australia Post Global (APG), a leading eCommerce solutions provider, the challenge lay in not just measuring their own carbon footprint, but in also understanding and influencing the emissions generated across their vast supplier network.
With Scope 3 emissions representing a significant portion of their environmental impact, APG needed a partner who could help them navigate the complexities of supplier engagement and identify collaborative opportunities which would benefit everyone in the supply chain.

THG Eco's Collaborative Approach to Decarbonisation
THG Eco’s team of research experts needed to understand the unique challenges and opportunities faced by each of APG’s partners. Through in-depth interviews, we gained a deep understanding of APG's top suppliers, uncovering their sustainability initiatives, carbon management strategies, and future commitments. This qualitative approach allowed us to capture the nuances of each supplier's journey, revealing valuable insights that would have been missed through a traditional survey-based approach.

Key Challenges and Opportunities of Logistics
The interviews revealed a diverse landscape of sustainability practices among APG's suppliers. Some were leading the charge, while others were just starting to explore their options. Through identifying which phases suppliers were at, we created an emissions risk profile for APG’s suppliers, allowing them to keep track of progress and accountability in the future.
Throughout our interview process we identified key challenges specific to the logistics industry, including the difficulties of electrifying fleets, implementing circular economy principles, and navigating evolving regulations and technological constraints.
Electrification & Fleet Decarbonisation: Suppliers faced challenges in adopting electric vehicles due to high cots, limited availability, and range anxiety
Waste Management & Circular Economy: Suppliers explored innovative recycling and waste reduction initiatives but encountered industry-specific obstacles
Regulatory & Technological Constraints: Suppliers had to navigate evolving regulations and technological limitations, affecting their sustainability efforts

However, the interviews also highlighted significant opportunities for collaboration and innovation. By sharing best practices and working together, APG and its suppliers could unlock new pathways to decarbonisation and drive meaningful progress towards net-zero.
More importantly, APG was able to better position itself as a knowledgeable and empathic partner with its key suppliers, demonstrating their own commitment to sustainable action whilst supporting progress in the value chain; enhancing their own value in the logistics ecosystem.

THG Eco's Impact: Turning Conversations into Carbon Reductions
THG Eco's supplier engagement project empowered APG to:
- Gain a deeper understanding of their suppliers' sustainability practices.
- Strategically rank and prioritise suppliers based on their carbon management progress
- Strengthen relationships and build trust with key suppliers
- Develop a collaborative carbon reduction strategy that extends beyond their direct operations
By taking a qualitative, relationship-driven approach, THG Eco helped APG turn conversations into carbon reductions, setting a new standard for supplier engagement in the logistics industry.
