ESC sought the help of THG Eco to calculate and offset the emissions from its 2022 European Society of Cardiology Congress in Barcelona. In addition, THG Eco attended the event to educate attendees on carbon credits and carbon neutrality.

About ESC
The European Society of Cardiology is a non-profit medical organisation with over 100,000 decision-makers and medical professionals working in the field of cardiology.
Together, they are working to advance the prevention, diagnosis and management of a disease that takes 4 million lives per year and costs the EU an estimated €196 billion annually.
The Challenge
With more than 105,000 members spanning Europe, the Mediterranean Basin and beyond, getting members together requires a lot of travel.
ESC was eager to understand the environmental impact of its 2022 Congress in Barcelona, set to attract over 20,000 attendees from around the world.
However, knowing how to identify the main emitters, calculate the event footprint and offset those emissions was a challenge for ESC.
The Solution
THG Eco was able to offer ESC a full event footprint calculation, which included:
- Identifying the main emitters of the event
- Highlighting the largest source of emissions
- Calculating the total emissions of the event
- Identifying high-quality carbon credits that could be used for offsetting
In addition, THG Eco was able to send a representative to the event, to educate delegates on carbon neutrality and credits.
The Journey
THG Eco worked with ESC to collate emissions data across seven key areas:
- Travel
- Construction
- Services
- Printing and merchandise
- Accommodation
- Catering
- Electricity and water
Following this exercise, THG was able to calculate the event footprint and highlight important metrics for ESC's future events.
The Results
- ESC's event emissions totalled 4,410.26 tonnes of CO2.
- Catering was the largest source of emissions, accounting for 31% of the total.
- 4,322 high-quality carbon credits were sourced for ESC, enabling them to offset the emissions from the event.
- THG Eco provided ESC with the framework for collecting future travel data from events, to help inform future reduction practices.
Conclusion
ESC were able to fully understand the environmental impact of their annual Congress - allowing them to identify areas for reduction, offset unavoidable emissions and educate attendees on how they could reduce their emissions too.
